Academics Overview

The academic program at our private school is designed to prepare students for the demands of a college preparatory program in high school, and a faculty of well-qualified teachers strives to reach this goal by setting daily objectives that focus on student achievement and growth. While the curriculum program is traditional, teachers use a variety of teaching methods to reach the various learning styles of the students at The Gooden School.

The independent school curriculum provides opportunities for student to further their potential and to master skills, while forming good work habits and developing a genuine joy of learning. A classic education is emphasized and instruction focuses on core subjects: mathematics, reading, writing, grammar, social studies, science, and foreign languages (Spanish K-8 and Latin 6-8). Students in all grades participate in visual and performing arts, and in Kindergarten and elementary, grades K-5, participate in a formal library program. Formal instruction in technology occurs in grades two through six and is integrated into the curriculum in grades seven and eight.

Participation in team sports is an option for all students in middle school, grades six through eight, and occasionally team sports are open to grades four and five as well. Four team sports are offered throughout the year: basketball, volleyball, football, and soccer. Additionally, students may participate in track and field, which includes track meets at local schools in the spring.
